I am a very thorough person which is probably why the business is doing well. As a separate note, when fielding calls we often get asked if we clean the downspouts. Our response is actually one of surprise that they had to deal with other companies that do not finish with a flush of the downspouts. I'm not saying this to brag on myself, but to segway into a story from this week.
Earlier this week, we took care of an initial clean out at a new customer's home in Lititz. During the day, I had a headache that I couldn't get past and knew I was not performing at full capacity. I made it through the day, but probably depended on my assistant for more than usual.
I decided that since we had a light schedule today, I would go back to the jobs from said day and do a quick check. Since it was raining anyway, I would easily be able to see if everything was flowing down the spouts. I am glad I chose to do this. At one of the houses, I found a big miss.
At the base of one of the downspouts, an ivy plant was growing up the inside of the spout and causing a solid block.
Sometimes clearing a spout is a trial and error process. I couldn't simply pull the clog out.
I pulled the loppers off the truck and snipped away at the ivy.
Next, I detached the downspout and the lower elbow.
Now, don't laugh when I say that I had to exert some force to pull the blockage from the elbow.
All I could compare it to would be one of those upside down plants. The ivy was being watered from the spout every rain.
The conclusion: Keep an eye out for ivy growing around or possibly in your downspouts.
